Only Murders in the Building is finally coming back for season 3. It promises a terrific new mystery with lots of laughs backed by a top-notch cast. However, some may have forgotten how season 2 turned out. So before the next year comes in, here’s a quick recap of OMITB season 2 and how it sets up this new year.

Caution: This article contains SPOILERS for Only Murders In the Building season 2

Season 2 started right where season 1 ended as Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short) and Mabel (Selena Gomez) were arrested for the murder of building landlord Bunny. They were quickly freed but decided the only way to clear their names was to find the true killer.

This led to various subplots and red herrings, which had Oliver realizing frenemy Teddy (Nathan Lane) was the real father of Oliver’s son while Mabel bonded with quirky artist Alice (Cara Delevingne).

The trio clashed with Cinda Canning (Tina Fey), the arrogant and bullying host of a true crime podcast who became famous for talking about the presumed murder of Becky Butler. Her long-suffering assistant Poppy (Adina Verson) revealed to the group she was a very much alive Becky, making them believe Cinda had faked the whole thing for attention.

Who really killed Bunny in Only Murders?

Things built to the trio calling the suspects together into a murder mystery game to uncover the killer. Mabel deduced it was Alice, snapping after mental problems, and it seemed proven true by Alice stabbing Charles. Cinda praised Mabel for her work and offered her a job on the podcast.

That had Becky/Poppy snapping to rant on all she’d done for Cinda and then making a slip of the tongue on something only the killer would know. At which point, Charles sat up, revealing this entire thing was a trap to trick Becky into confessing. She and police detective Kerbs (her lover) had hit on the idea of killing Bunny, then get rich and famous by doing a podcast about it.

Becky and Kerbs were both arrested, with the gang congratulating themselves on their work.

It then cut to one year later as Charles was about to go on stage for the opening night of a brand new Broadway show with actor Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd). After a backstage argument, the curtain went up, only for Glenroy to drop dead on stage.

That sets up season 3, which is sure to get even wilder for a new season of murder mystery comedy.

Only Murders in the Building season 3 premieres Tuesday, Aug. 8, on Hulu.
