Barbie and the 6 best (and 5 worst) movies of 2023 so far

One of my personal goals for 2023 is to watch as many movies as I can — and boy have I! We are almost eight complete months into the year 2023, and I’ve tried to see as many movies as possible. However, they haven’t all been hits in my book. From all the movies I’ve checked out, and based critics and audience scores, here are six of the best movies of 2023 so far, as well as five movies I wish I could unsee.

What were the most anticipated movies of 2023? I would say Barbie, Oppenheimer, and Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania are at the top of the list. I would also add The Little Mermaid and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to the list. Did you check out all of these features? Do you think they made it to my top six? Where do they land on your favorites? Let’s get right to it!

Please note: The movies are not in any particular order.

6 best movies of 2023 (so far)

  • The Whale
  • Beau Is Afraid
  • John Wick: Chapter 4
  • M3GAN
  • Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse
  • Barbie

I know The Whale was received with mixed reactions, and I get it. The depression and grief can come off as forced, but hey, it does the job! Not only that, but the acting in this movie is brilliant. If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend you watch it.

From this list, I’d like to point out that M3GAN was a surprise! I was not expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. The movie is fun, doesn’t take itself too seriously, and MEGAN is actually very creepy.

Finally, I want to highlight both Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse and Barbie. Both of these movies exceeded my high expectations. The Spider-Verse franchise continues to champion diversity and representation. What a cliffhanger, too! I can’t wait to see what will unfold next. As for Barbie, what a fun surprise! It’s a must-see.

5 worst movies of 2023 (so far)

  • Evil Dead Rise
  • 65
  • Asteroid City
  • Children of the Corn
  • Shazam! Fury of the Gods

Shazam! Fury of the Gods did so poorly at the box office, I almost feel bad. But what a letdown! Honestly, though, I should have known better. The first one was average. The cast hyped this movie up so much…and for what? An even letdown, however, was definitely Evil Dead Rise

Sony Pictures needs to send Adam Driver a check for wasting his time with 65, that’s all I’m going to say. Lastly, putting together a A+ cast does not mean the story will be a hit. Asteroid City is a snooze fest, and if you say you enjoyed this movie, you’re lying.

Did any of these movies make it to your best or worst movies of 2023 list? With four months left this year (at the time of this writing), I’m excited to see how much this list will change as I watch more.
