Fans of the crime genre are no doubt waiting on the edge of their seats for any news regarding a potential Mayor of Kingstown season 3, which would be the next installment of the Paramount Plus original. The series stars Jeremy Renner as Mike McLusky, who takes over as the leader of the fictional Michigan town after his brother passes away. Although Mike always wanted to get out of Kingstown, he’s now left with no choice but to try and bring order to the corrupt town.
Mayor of Kingstown was created by writer/producer Taylor Sheridan, who co-created Yellowstone and its spinoffs, and actor Hugh Dillon, who’s appeared in shows like Yellowstone, The Killing, and The Expanse. Dillon also portrays Ian in Mayor of Kingstown.
The crime thriller debuted in Nov. 2021 and saw 2.6 million viewers tuning in to the first episode, which aired on the Paramount Network and streamed on Paramount Plus simultaneously.
The first episode of Mayor of Kingstown became Paramount Network’s biggest scripted series premiere since Yellowstone premiered in 2018. Because of that, it was a no-brainer the show would be renewed for a second season. But now that Mayor of Kingstown season 2 wrapped up in March 2023, will there be a third season?
Mayor of Kingstown season 3 is officially happening!
It was announced on Sept. 6, 2023, that Mayor of Kingstown season 3 is in the works. Yay! We were unsure when a renewal might come through, especially considering the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes, which can potentially get in the way of negotiating. But now fans can rest assured the series will be returning at some point.
It took about a month after the first season concluded for the second season to be announced, so it’s no surprise fans were growing more and more impatient by the day without any news about a potential third season.
While Paramount shared viewership numbers for the premiere of Mayor of Kingstown, we couldn’t find any information regarding the viewership for the second season. Without knowing how many people tuned in, it’s hard to know what the network was thinking when considering the renewal. That said, the reviews did improve from season 1 to season 2, which is a good thing.
Jeremy Renner teased Mayor of Kingstown season 3
In May, Renner took to Twitter to share a message that sent fans spiraling. Posting a fan-cam video of himself in the show, the actor wrote in his caption, “Might be time to start mental preparation for 3?” Of course, people took this as he’s fully down for a third season of the show, and it does seem that way.
Jeremy Renner suffered major snowplow accident
Speaking of Jeremy Renner, the Mayor of Kingstown actor suffered a major accident on New Year’s Day 2023 when he was run over by a 14,300-lb. snowplow while out helping a family clear snow in Reno, Nevada according to People Magazine. Renner was reported to be “in critical but stable condition” when he was transported to the hospital, and he went into surgery the next day. His representative confirmed that the actor suffered “blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries.”
Fortunately, the surgery seemed to go well and Renner was on the mend, sharing an update to his fans on Instagram on Jan. 3, 2023. “Thank you all for your kind words,” he wrote in his caption alongside a selfie from his hospital bed. “[I’m] too messed up now to type. But I send love to you all.”
In April 2023, Renner sat down with Diane Sawyer to talk about his road to recovery. Despite the unfortunate incident, the actor appeared to be in extremely good spirits. He did get emotional while discussing the accident, of course. You can stream the full special on Hulu.
Renner also appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that same month where he discussed the accident, walking on stage with a cane. Similar to the interview with Diane Sawyer, he seemed to be in a good mood, grateful to be alive.
Given Renner is still on his road to recovery, he might need additional time between seasons.
The Mayor of Kingstown creators know where show could go next
Not only is Renner down for another season of the Paramount+ show, but the creators revealed they wanted to continue as well. In an interview with Deadline published in Jan. 2023, Sheridan and Dillon discussed the start of the second season, Renner’s accident, and when a third season could potentially come out. Dillon shared:
“Taylor and I have multiple ideas for multiple seasons. If everything went according to plan with Paramount+ and the rest of it, I would think that we’d start in August, September, maybe pre-production in the summer.”
Of course, Dillon didn’t reveal what exactly he and Sheridan have in mind, but they’re ready to start working on the third season whenever it’s renewed. There’s just one hiccup they might face if Paramount+ gives them the green light…
Will the writers’ and actors’ strikes delay Mayor of Kingstown season 3?
Yup, the writers’ and actors’ strikes will likely delay Mayor of Kingstown season 3. In case you missed it, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) was unable to come to an agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) regarding their contract and they began striking on May 1, 2023. Then, in July, the actors of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) faced the same dilemma and began striking as well.
We’re already into September and the studios have not budged, meaning a long list of writers’ rooms for TV shows and movies have been put on pause.
So even though we know Mayor of Kingstown is renewed, Dillon and Sheridan are not be able to start writing season 3 right now. We know that the August or September timeframe Dillon mentioned is not possible.
It’s still possible the third season could come out sometime in 2024, but it would likely be at the end of the year. It all depends on when the studios will compromise and the writers and actors stop striking
Stay tuned for more updates on the gripping crime drama.
