#8: NCIS season 11

This year was all about goodbyes. After fans were rocked by the news Cote de Pablo was leaving the show, the opening episodes had Tony attacked by a sniper while Gibbs was investigating who killed the Secretary of the Navy. That led to Ziva’s unexpected exit and the debut of Elle Bishop (Emily Wickersham) who sparked things up nicely. We also got some past faces like Abigail Borin and Gibbs’ dad wanting his help aiding an old veteran. Some episodes still had twists like Tony learning the supposed “party girl” he’s protecting is really a spy.

There was a hilarious episode with Fornell, his ex (who’s also Gibbs’ ex-wife), her boyfriend and Fornell’s daughter coming together on a crazy case. Gibbs also worked with an ex-girlfriend on a case while Vance had to make peace with his father-in-law, and McGee and Delilah took a big step. The highlight of the season was a two-parter that served as the backdoor pilot for NCIS: New Orleans. The season ends on a somber note with Gibbs saying goodbye to his dad. A wonderful tribute to Ralph Waite and the character work made what could have been a rough year shine better.

#7: NCIS season 8

At first, this season looked a bit weaker after the opener of Gibbs saving his dad from the Reynosa Cartel. That included an episode where they had interns, Palmer was jealous of Ducky’s, Abby was convinced hers was a crook, and Tim’s didn’t care about law enforcement. Then there was Abby becoming obsessed with finishing a victim’s complex math formula, Tony’s dating life and other filler plots. But it picked up with a thrilling two-parter where Ziva’s dad was in danger which had him and Ziva overcoming some of their past issues and a return of Abigail Borin.

A wonderful episode had TV legend Bob Newhart turning in a fine performance as Ducky’s mentor aiding on a case while hiding a secret. The last five episodes were dedicated to the Port-to-Port Killer, a serial murderer in Baltimore which had the team having to work with local police. That included a flashback episode on how Gibbs and Tony first met and the shocking death of Gibbs’ pal Mike Franks. Those last episodes alone boosted this season nicely into a terrific thriller.
