House of the Dragon, the captivating prequel set centuries before the events of Game of Thrones, first graced our screens on August 21, 2022. Fans were swiftly entranced by the Targaryen dynasty’s tumultuous history, and within just a week of its release, HBO delighted viewers by announcing the renewal of the series for a second season!

However, the road to the next season has not been without challenges. As unforeseen strikes by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) unfolded in May and July 2023, the production status for House of the Dragon season 2 became uncertain. Many fans, hungry for more dragon fire and political intrigue, anxiously awaited updates, wondering if the strikes had disrupted the show’s filming schedule.

House of the Dragon season 2 wraps filming in September

Well, fans of this enchanting fantasy series can rejoice, as the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes have not derailed the filming of House of the Dragon season 2. In fact, the second season has completed filming. Variety reported the news on Sept. 27, 2023.

The show’s ability to forge ahead during these turbulent times can be primarily attributed to its filming location in the United Kingdom, where labor regulations differ from those in the United States. Notably, the cast of the series is affiliated with the British actors union Equity, rendering them unaffected by the strikes across the Atlantic.

Additionally, George R.R. Martin himself confirmed that the scripts for the season were wrapped up prior to the commencement of the writers’ strike, and no writing has been done since then. According to a report by Digital Spy, filming was supposed to wrap in September 2023 and it looks like they’ve followed that schedule.

Actor Steve Toussaint, who plays Corlys Velaryon, announced on Instagram on Sept. 28 that he finished filming. He uploaded behind-the-scenes photos, including one of him in his white wig, with the caption:

"“‘And that’s a wrap on Steve!’ What a blast to work with such great people! Now it’s in the hands of editors, SFX folk, and whoever else. Hope you like it when you eventually get to see it! #hotd #hotd2.”"

While the exact release date has not been announced yet for House of the Dragon season 2, it is widely speculated that the show will premiere on HBO in summer 2024. With season 2 progressing steadily toward its final stages of production, anticipation continues to build, and fans are eagerly awaiting any hints about when they can delve back into the Targaryen saga.
