What do you get when you mix Stephen King’s horror skills with Halloweentown‘s Kimberly J. Brown? Only one of the best Halloween hidden gems out there! Loosely based on Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House, Rose Red is a mini-series that follows a team of psychics investigating a mansion responsible for 23 deaths and disappearances over its history.
While there are plenty of haunted house stories out there, few have the historical depth of Rose Red, which not only extensively details the mansion’s history in the series but also has a book in the real world ostensibly published by the show’s protagonists to further expand on its backstory. To further srengthen the story, there was also a website built for the series’s fictional university.
Technically, Rose Red is not based on a true story, though it does base elements on real places, including a house from King’s hometown and the Winchester Mystery House. If you liked Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House and the first season of American Horror Story, you’re bound to find something to love in Stephen King’s Rose Red.
Is Stephen King’s Rose Red streaming online in 2023?
Rose Red is currently streaming on Hulu, along with several of Stephen King’s other projects.
For those who finish the mini-series and are desperate for more, there are a couple of options.
Rose Red does have a prequel film, however it was made without the involvement of Stephen King. The prequel film, The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer, can be rented on Apple TV or Vudu for $3.99.
For those who prefer the Stephen King side of the series, the idea of children and teenagers with mystical powers are everywhere. There is a connected universe of characters with the shine or the shining, many of whom have similar abilities to those seen in Rose Red.
The most obvious example is Carrie White, who caused a downpair of rocks similar to that in this series. While there hasn’t been a true crossover with Rose Red yet, fans of the mini-series will notice the trends in The Shining, Doctor Sleep, and even Pet Sematary, among others.
