Spoiler alert! If you have yet to watch LEGO Masters season 4 episode 4, titled “Build It By Ear,” please note there are spoilers ahead.
Hidden Remote caught up with LEGO Masters contestants Tim and Tim, who were eliminated in episode 4 after their creation failed to impress judges Jamie Berard and Amy Corbett. As a Texan, I was sad to see friends Tim and Time leave the show. I feel like they still had so much to give! But hey, I’m biased.
I got to chat with the duo about their journey on LEGO Masters and they shared which LEGO set they have found the most challenging, and so much more! Read on…
Tim and Tim on their LEGO Masters journey and their LEGO community
*Please note this interview has been edited for clarity and length.
Hidden Remote: Let’s start from the top! Whose idea was it to join the show?
Tim Howell: It was originally my idea. I kind of reached out to a couple people and actually kind of thought Tim [Tim Hutchings] would be the most likely to jump in. And there was a pretty strong effort [from both] to get on the show.
Hidden Remote: Nice! Now, how did you guys meet? Would you say that this experience has made your friendship stronger?
Tim Hutchings: In our LEGO club here in Houston. We both jumped right in and helped with a lot of things to help the club. [After joining] we started to look at our lives and the similarities. It’s like our partnership was destined to be.
Hidden Remote: Did you guys spend a lot of time with the other teams?
Tim Howell: A decent amount! There are breaks during filming and between challenges. There is also time in the evenings and on the weekends. We definitely have some time to go to dinner, hang out. And that’s really, to me, one of the best parts of it is meeting all the other contestants. I took full advantage of that.
Tim Hutchings: I tried every minute to spend with anybody that wanted to hang out. You don’t know how long it’s gonna last, I did take advantage of it.
Hidden Remote: That makes sense! From the first elimination, I could see a lot of emotion. I thought how these are real friendships!
Tim Hutchings: We were all very quick to bond together and feel like family. It was tough to see Brand and Mike go home on the first one. And Amie and Karen. And Chris and Jordan. Hopefully, the rest of them feel the same about us.
Hidden Remote: From all of your LEGO creations, my favorite is the tree house. I feel like there’s a lot going on, but not in an overwhelming way, but just a lot to look at and appreciate. Which is your favorite and which do you think was the toughest?
Tim Howell: I mean, the toughest one was the last one that got us eliminated! We had some pivoting and technical problems. We very nearly pulled it off, too! In a way, that’s was also my favorite build.
Tim Hutchings: I don’t know if I can pick a favorite. I really enjoyed and loved all of them. Even the last one, we pulled off a miracle and I was very happy with what we ended up with. It was a lot of fun.
Hidden Remote: Are there any creations you did on the show that you would like to replicate at home or in your LEGO club?
Tim Howell: Yeah! I’ve already thought about trying to redo that last one, clean it up and make it work. I don’t know if I’ll get there or not.
Tim Hutchings: I don’t know! I’m gonna go back to my wild west. [laughs] I had a lot of fun and improved my skills and I want to take that further. But as far as any of the themes, part of it is I don’t remember! It was a good thing we saw each week because I couldn’t remember exactly what we did do. [laughs]
Hidden Remote: Outside of LEGO Masters, which LEGO set has taken you guys the longest to put together? What has been the most challenging?
Tim Howell: I’d say, for me, it’s probably the big Millennium Falcon over there [shows off his build]. I mean, yeah, that probably took a good 20 -25 hours to put together.
Tim Hutchings: I don’t know. Probably my son’s Death Star. That’s one of the bigger sets we have. I’ve got a lot of big sets sitting in the closet that I don’t have space for so they haven’t got built yet, so I really can’t give an honest answer on that one.
Hidden Remote: Tell me how much fun it is to have Will Arnett as the host?
Tim Howell: [laughs] Will’s funny! A lot of what he says isn’t going to make it on air, but he’s entertaining.
Tim Hutchings: Yeah, he [Will] was one of the big reasons I wanted to be on the show. I’ve enjoyed him forever and I just felt like Will and I would have a lot of fun hanging out and I did! You don’t see any of it, but we had a lot of good fun with Will. I even got to give him a big hug at the end. That made it worth it!
Hidden Remote: Does Will really scare you guys with the countdown buzzer? When he shouts it’s one hour left and so?
Tim Howell: I can’t remember which episode it was, but there’s one that scared me. I literally jumped off the floor a few inches and there was a camera on me, so I don’t know if that’s in this last episode or not.
Hidden Remote: Is there a team that you guys admire most?
Tim Howell: Oh my gosh, I’m so honored to have been able to hang and build against each and every one. In fact, I’m so I’m so excited to see how the season plays out because they set the bar very high in the beginning!
Hidden Remote: That’s great. There are not many shows where a competition is so genuine and friendly. That’s one of the things that families love about LEGO Masters.
Tim Howell: And that’s the whole LEGO community in general. It’s just amazing how people from everywhere and every walk of life can come together over that little piece of plastic and everything else goes out the window.
Tim Hutchings: It’s all about sharing, you know, your excitement, sharing what you do, your techniques, and just the bonding. We help each other find parts, someone would say “you know where so and so piece is?” And we’ll be like “yeah, it’s over here!” One team was running out of time and others helped them out by putting figures together.
Tim and Tim, we’re gonna miss ya! LEGO builders, don’t miss the next episode, it is titled “Cirque du Soleil,” so you know it’s going to be HUGE. Now that the Tim’s are out, who are you rooting for this season?
