We traveled to Albuquerque, New Mexico to visit the set of NBC’s summer drama, ‘The Night Shift,’ and bring you all the details, interviews, and more, on what to expect from the back half of season 4!

NBC hosted Hidden Remote and other media outlets at ABQ to give us a behind-the-scenes look at The Night Shift‘s fourth season. The day we toured the set and met the cast and crew, they were filming the season 4 finale and we got to see them in action. Saying this experience was exciting is an understatement.

In between takes, we sat down with the main cast and chatted about what’s to come for their characters as we head to the season four finale.

Let’s cut to it! Pun definitely intended…

Romance shake-ups, engagements, more tinder dates?

Q: Things are going to be changing now that Kenny (JR Lemon) will be dating Paul’s (Robert Bailey Jr.) sister, Bella (Erica Tazel). How will that change the dynamic?

Tanaya Beatty (who portrays Shannon): Paul is having a tough time transitioning! But yeah, during this season, Kenny and Paul and I all share an apartment and are getting on each others nerves with roommate drama. So this may be good for everyone, Kenny might be moving out. *laughs*

More from NBC

Q: If Kenny and Bella were to be engaged to be married, would that put pressure on your character and Paul? Since you two have been together longer?

Beatty: I don’t think she (Shannon) wants to tie the knot anytime soon. I’m not sure it’s quite in the cards for her and Paul yet.

Q: What else can we expect from your character this season?

Beatty: Shannon is kinda at a crossroads. Being in the ER environment is starting to wear on her. Each new patient coming in is making her a bit bitter and cynical in some ways. And I think she’s beginning to wonder if this is the right environment for her, if this is where she best serves.

Q: Will be seeing more of your crazy Tinder date since it was left open-ended?

Scott Wolf (who portrays Dr. Scott Clemmens): Yeah! I mean, I do think it was an open-ended thing, what she () was hinting at about being an addict. So I think he’ll (Dr. Scott) be a little apprehensive about going on another date since his first one went the way it did.

Q: What can we expect to see from Jordan and her love life?

Jill Flint: She’s [Jordan] in a weird place. When you look at her relationship with TC, I think that they’ve finally come to the place where no matter how much they love each other, that’s not enough. You can love someone, but they’re just not right for you. At this point in their lives they’re in completely different worlds.

Coming into this season, she’s single again and it’s in the backdrop — the possibility that she wants to date. This will get complicated when TC comes home.

Q: Not to go back on Jordan’s love life, but —

Flint: Everybody wants to know Jordan’s love life! I wish it was less about Jordan’s love life, I wish it was more about Jordan. Instead of dating a new guy, sometimes I wish that she could have a moment to herself to really center and focus. But watching someone centered and focused isn’t fun in a drama *laughs* I’m just sometimes like, ‘girl, slow your roll!’

Upcoming episodes

Q: Will Annie’s suicide be addressed?

Wolf: Without spoiling anything… but it’s not just gone away (Annie’s suicide). It’ll be dealt with in some form or another, but I don’t know if there’s a clear path as to exactly how that’s going to go down. That’s the none-spoiler version! *laughs*

Q: Episode 7, “Keep the Faith,” is supposed to be a big one and feature real veterans. What can you tell us about it?

Wolf: From the beginning, this show has dealt with veterans and it’s always been at the center of — really kind of the heart of the show.

This season, they’ve decided to really lean into it in an important way. The fact that this show has the willingness and the courage to tell meaningful, honest stories about veteran experiences, not sugarcoating things or telling only one side but a lot of the challenging things as well.

Q: Besides Jordan’s death, what would you not like to see happen to your character?

Flint: Ooh! Besides her death… She’s been through some pretty awful experiences, but I don’t think there is anything I would not want to experience through her. So, I say go for it! That’s life. Let her navigate that.

Q: The episode where Scott brings a character back to life, there was a lot of respect from his speech. It was a big moment. I feel for both of the characters.

Flint: First of all, if people are wondering if it’s a possible to bring back someone from the dead after 60 some minutes — that’s absolutely possible. It has been done. This is all pulled from headlines. We talk to medical professionals who have stories for us. I say this all the time: Reality is stranger than fiction.

Q: Tell us about where Kenny is headed this season!

JR Lemon: This season, we’ll get to see Kenny sorta take a slide. He loses his gym, all the money that he has, he’s basically at ground zero. So as we see him at the bottom, he’s testing the waters, he’s getting picky with Paul, with Jordan…

He’ll be in a relationship that is significant. This one in particular. Because Kenny has never had anyone. He’s always done everything himself. So no one has ever been there to sort of help him be more. With this new relationship, it’s the first time he feels that.

Q: If your character HAD to die, how would you like to see him go?

Robert Bailey Jr. (Paul): Oh my goodness, uhmm…  I think based on Paul’s journey so far… he would want it to be some sort of heroic way. Saving someone’s life. I wouldn’t want it to be peaceful, I want it to be on a note, something he accomplished.

Q: What are some of your most memorable scenes?

Brendan Fehr: Baby on a plane! Haha. No, for me, one of them is when Drew had to come out in front of everybody.

Eoin Macken: I like a lot of the serious stuff. I especially love the early stuff we did [from the first seasons]. I love working with Jennifer Beals. When we very gently address serious topics and how the show handles that.

Fehr: Yeah, raising the question, raising the issue, without answering them.

Diversity and Women

Q: We love the diversity The Night Shift brings to the table, was that something that was important to you when you joined?

Alma Sisneros: Definitely! This is big for The Night Shift and I’ve seen it grow with every season. I think it’s very important for children and young adults to see someone who looks like them. To see someone who represents their culture. I think that’s really cool that Night Shift does this, they’re doing a great job.

Jocelyn’s important, she brings the Hispanic side of things. As well as Shannon (Tanaya Beatty), she’s from Canada, native American, I thought bringing her in was big, to have that representation. And they address it on the show! They talk about her coming from a reservation and wanting to go back to help her people. The representation is great and very important.

Q: Especially women.

Sisneros: Absolutely. I was just discussing this with the other panel. I used to be a teacher, and when I taught, I had a lot of people tell me I was a great role model. The first couple of times I heard that, it didn’t click. But as I keep going, you hear this more and more. “You’re an inspiration for my daughter.” It hit me. I’m representing something here! I’m letting these Hispanic girls know — you can graduate from high school, you can go to college, you can be anything you want to be.

Q: Are you still in touch with any of your old students?

Sisneros: Yeah! Their parents as well, actually! They tell me they’re so proud and that they follow what I’m doing and watch The Night Shift.

Gabe Sachs, co-creator of The Night Shift, closed with a few teasers:

"“There’s more action then we’ve ever had. TC and Jordan are settled in as friends, but there will always be something there for fans, a tease. You see how our characters weave in and out of the real world.”"

The Night Shift returns with season 4, episode 7, “Keep the Faith,” on August 10, only on NBC. Season 1 -3 are available on Netflix!
