‘Shadowhunters’ S2, E19: What is Valentine’s new plan with the Seelie Queen?

Valentine revealed two new allies in “Hail and Farewell,” but what could his new agreement with the Seelie Queen mean for the ‘Shadowhunters’ finale?

It’s not a secret that Valentine is an expert manipulator among Shadowhunters, and his words have saved his own life on more than one occasion. Recently, he convinced Jonathan to work with him on his quest to find the three Mortal Instruments, and even though Jonathan would disagree with us, it has seemed like Valentine was the one in control. However in “Hail and Farewell,” Valentine changed his plans very quickly when he learned that the Mortal Mirror was actually Lake Lyn, causing him to try and portal out of New York.

When he realized that portaling was impossible though, he instead worked with Jonathan to create dozens of forsaken to fight back against Clary, Jace, Alec and Izzy. It’s difficult for us to believe that Valentine would want to actually kill Jace or Clary, but his confidence in Clary and Jace’s fighting ability must be fairly high because he left Jonathan and the forsaken behind while he went on a secret errand.

After kidnapping Maia, Meliorn told her that the Seelie Queen was attending to “a more pressing matter” before she’d come back into the Realm. So what was more important than talking to Maia? Meeting with Valentine of course. Standing on the bridge in Central Park (by the way, there is no river or moving body of water in Central Park, but we’ll just let that slide), Valentine whispers to the Seelie Queen about something he has that she would want. We don’t find out what he offered to her, but we’re told that it will benefit both of them.

  • What would the both of them want? The end of the Clave? A full-blown war between Shadowhunters and Downworlders? When talking with Simon, the Queen has repeated that she wants to see “change” aka war in the Shadow World and has no intention of trusting Shadowhunters whatsoever. It’s likely that Valentine’s offer will help propel that war.

You may have also realized that Valentine had another secret ally in the episode, someone who informed him about Lake Lyn, but the only people we saw with that information were Clary, Jace, Alec, Isabelle and Inquisitor Herondale. Valentine told Jonathan that his “operative in Alicante just send him a fire message” to explain that the mirror was “in Lake Lyn.”

So did someone in Alicante intercept the video chat or did Grandma Herondale tell Valentine herself? Perhaps when she positioned the guards around Lake Lyn one of them figured out why the lake was so valuable and was able to communicate back to NY? Through their game of telephone, Valentine also may have a bit of misinformation. He said to Jonathan that the mirror was IN the lake, so he still might not know that the mirror IS the lake.

We do know that a “traitor will be revealed” to Jace and Clary in the Season 2 finale, and we’re thinking it may have something to do with how Valentine has been getting his information. Regardless, we don’t think the Lake Lyn intel is what Valentine shared with the Seelie Queen because he wouldn’t have had to whisper it in secret, unless he was dropping names…
