Season 5: “Work Hard or Die Trying, Girl”

Season 5 had a lot to live up to with such a stellar Season 4 and it delivered for the most part. I don’t think it was as good as Season 4, but it had some good episodes. No episode was greater than the premiere, “Work Hard or Die Trying, Girl.”

This episode featured Gene and Courtney in competing musical after her Working Girl musical is selected instead of his Die Hard one. The episode also tells the story between Gene and Courtney’s perspective of what happened. Thankfully, the two eventually work everything out and end up, working together and having a mash-up musical.

Obviously, the original songs about the movies are what took this episode over the edge. The high points in this episode included all the songs, some of the 80’s-related humor and the cameo by Carly Simon. The episode also featured a lot of the kids’ friends and had a part for almost everyone, giving a part to some of our favorite minor characters.

There weren’t very many low points for this episode either except for Frond canceling the musical and Gene making it a one-man show. It eventually all worked out in the end, though. Coming off the high of Season 4, this was an amazing episode to start Season 5 off with.

Honorable Mentions: “Dawn of the Peck”, “Hawk & Chick”, “Late Afternoon in the Garden of Bob and Louise” and “Can’t Buy Me Math
