5 Reasons why This Is Us is the best show of its genre

This Is Us is an amazing show that has won the hearts of fans everywhere. So why is it the best of its kind right now?

  1. Substance – This is Us, has substance in its storyline, within every character, and with each relationship between characters. The bond between Kevin and Kate, the way Randall and Beth are serious relationship goals, Kevin and Sophie’s lifelong romance, and the way Jack and Rebecca tackle whatever life throws their way — the show is inspiring and moving us constantly. Nothing can be considered as just scratching the surface or superficial. The substance, the weight that every scene carries is the reason audiences are finding their cheeks wet with tears.
  2. No Stone Is Left Unturned – This Is Us shows the characters through most of their lives, and in the case of the triplets, all of their lives. Going through life with a character from birth to adulthood gives us insight as to why characters have select traits, why they are sensitive to one thing or struggle with another. It makes us feel closer to the characters because we feel like we really know them.  Seeing the way Randall struggles as a child with searching for his birth parents, lets the audience feel his vulnerability. When Will enters the picture, and later Déjà — the audience is that much more invested and engaged.
  3. Rich Characters – The character development in This Is Us, is unprecedented in the way that we see so much in each episode. The way the show goes back and forth in time, allows us to grasp the development of characters in a much shorter amount of time. It doesn’t feel rushed or crowded. It just has us saps emotionally invested that much quicker. In addition to seeing so much of the characters, the characters are exceptionally likable and uniquely realistic. They have real-life issues that many of us can relate to, that stir empathy and compassion. Jack’s admirable integrity paired with his struggle with alcoholism, Randall’s perfectionism and a tendency toward breakdowns and exhaustion, Kate’s battle with weight, and Kevin’s insecurities and need to be taken seriously; it’s all so familiar.
  4. The Writing – The complexity of the storyline is truly fantastic. The intricate web of relationships and connections is so engaging and really inspires attention and commitment from its audience. We have to know what happens next, what happened in the past . . . What happened to Jack? Why is it Kate’s fault? The show explores so much yet leaves out such key pieces of the puzzle. It’s intense for those of us dying to know what’s going on. It’s a guarantee we’ll be back for the next episode, every time.
  5. The Cast – Not only is the acting impressive, but the cast is perfect. The younger versions of the triplets are the perfect complement to their older selves. They all do such a great job at being true to their character, which is incredibly impressive considering they have 3 different actors playing the same character at different points in their life. It never feels out-of-place, it flows perfectly. The chemistry between actors is so apparent. Their interactions feel very organic and sincere. Even Mandy Moore, playing herself at different points of aging, pulls off playing the mother of three grown adults in a totally believable and endearing way. This Is Us is the first of its kind and the best of its genre.
