One of the biggest surprises of the second season of This Is Us was the glimpse we got into the future of Randall and Tess all grown-up. Was this a one-time treat or a new narrative turn?

More from NBC

This Is Us has always been a series about one family by telling their story through many different timelines. Since the beginning it has seemed that the present day story of adult Randall, Kevin, and Kate was the primary setting and everything else in the flashbacks were just foundations for their lives.

It seems like that could be changing in the future with just one scene that took place a few episodes ago. The episode directly after the now infamous crock pot fire incident featured a grown up version of Beth and Randall’s daughter Tess. We even got to see an older Randall. Is it possible that This Is Us might one day transition to being about the future rather than the present?

This series has grown in popularity like almost no other show on television. Networks like NBC have struggled in the past to create new shows that become phenomenons like this one and it makes sense they would want to plan for its future. The second season ends on March 13th and I have no doubt that the creators and NBC will want several more seasons out of these characters. Investing in the future of the children of our main characters is a good idea to build a long standing series.

We’ll need a few more children in the lives of these characters if they want to make a big enough cast to support a future timeline, but that it is easily possible. We already know that Toby and Kate want to have children and Kevin could totally already have a kid out there somewhere. Also, Sophie showing up pregnant might be a nice way to get the two of talking again. It’s possible that one day we could be watching a story that follows the Pearson family through the past, present, and future.

The season finale of This Is Us airs tonight on NBC at 8/9 C, be sure to tune in!
