Doing live musicals has become extremely popular with the fans, but many of them have been adaptations of original musical movies. There have been a few on-stage musicals adapted for the movie setting (such as Les Miserables), but nothing quite on the scale like Jesus Christ Superstar Live. The NBC show promises to be perfect for your Easter Sunday night viewing.
The musical was the epic 1970s rock musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber (composer) and Tim Rice (lyricist). It tells the story of Jesus Christ (hence the name), as he goes through his final days. There’s the betrayal of Judus, the anger from the local people, the love of Mary Magdalene, and much more.

Jesus Christ Superstar Live stars John Legend in the titular character, as he suffers the questions the Biblical character had during his final days. His last words were “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?” Alice Cooper stars as King Herod and Sara Bareilles as Mary Magdalene.

The musical will be very different from all that have come before on NBC and even ABC. There is no dialogue throughout the musical, focusing purely on the music and storytelling through the lyrics.
Legend has shared that he couldn’t turn down the chance to play Jesus Christ. It came at the right time, as it was definitely a challenge but one he felt ready for. And as long as everyone gives great performances, he will be more than happy about the musical.
