Shadowhunters season 3: Matthew Daddario breaks down Alec’s growing complexities (and why they’re problematic)
Hidden Remote: And we’ve seen some new sides to Alec a little bit in season 3. There’s been more comedy and little more rule-breaking. What was it like to film those comedic scenes with Javier and Harry in Lorenzo’s mansion?
It was super fun. I think that the show really lends itself to humor, which is something I’ve noticed the fans really respond very positively to, especially because a lot of the show is very dark and is very upsetting, or emotional and ominous. So that humor then adds to the story and makes those impactful moments more impactful. And we have a great time filming because we like doing that kind of fun stuff. Funny scenes are fun to do.
So we absolutely enjoyed them. I think we had a ton of fun at the house at the warlock party, and at the warlock aftermath at Lorenzo’s house, and we have some funny moments later on, but things definitely get a little less amusing as time goes on. But we also definitely add more funny moments along the way, and we always enjoy them when we get a chance to do them. I’m happy the fans have responded positively to it because I think that’s something we’re proud of doing.
Hidden Remote: So the last few times we’ve talked, you’ve brought up this kind of ongoing theme about how all the other characters are the ones causing problems for Alec, and Alec is just trying to live his best life and no one’s letting him. So I wanted to ask you, what does Alec’s perfect day look like? No one’s causing problems, and he can just do his thing. What do you think Alec would do with that day?

Winter is Coming
Matthew: [Laughs] You see, the problem is, Alec doesn’t know, because Alec has never had the opportunity to explore those things. And we’re going to see certain aspects of it with Magnus and how he, or how they, choose to spend their time.
But I think that realistically, Alec’s favorite day would be a day where he goes a full day at work without one of his idiot pals summoning a demon in somewhere, or going on some mission unauthorized, or doing something stupid like getting themselves in trouble with the Queen of Hell. So, that would be an ideal day. I’m going to stick to the theme. One day without his pals ruining everything.
Now, at the same time, this season we’re going to start to see that Alec is a source of problems and that his infallibility as the perfect angel that we all love might start to become a little bit… He’s going to make problems for himself. So he gets to experience that, which is great. He now gets to be one of those dumb dumbs in his office. He’s really going to screw the pooch.
