Wyatt Cenac brings his unique brand of interpersonal connection to Birmingham as he explores police apologies – specifically the lack thereof.

Wyatt Cenac is a man on a mission. He’s exposing problems – both large and small – to the American public on his new HBO docu-series, Wyatt Cenac’s Problem Areas. Each week, Cenac explores issues ranging from the silly (chicken bones) to the serious (police brutality) in an attempt to connect with an audience and bring them information that matters.

Cenac has a rich history of comedic reporting under his belt from his years as a correspondent and writer at The Daily Show. Since then, he’s been a busy guy, acting, doing standup, and writing. But now he’s back to doing something he so clearly excels at: reporting with a twist.

Two episodes in, and Cenac’s show has taken focused aim at America’s broken justice system and how it unfairly oppresses and targets people of color. These are important yet thorny issues that we must face and address as a nation in order to make any forward progress.

However, Cenac knows that these conversations aren’t going to be easy. In an upcoming episode, he chats with a “living statue” in Birmingham, Alabama, and when the old guy starts to explain his clearly uninformed position on racial tensions in the area, Cenac shows admirable restraint in his response. With his wry sense of humor and quick mind, Wyatt Cenac is in a prime position to introduce worthwhile conversations and narratives about topics that concern the American public. HBO fans may find his show similar in ways to Last Week Tonight with John Oliver – in fact, Oliver is a producer on Problem Areas – but with an increased focus on human connection and practical solutions. Cenac knows that there’s no change without consensus, and he’s working on being a force for that change, one conversation at a time.

‘Wyatt Cenac’s Problem Areas’ airs Fridays at 11:30 pm EST on HBO.
