Timeless heads to the Civil War where they help make sure Rittenhouse doesn’t prevent a crucial rebellion lead by Harriet Tubman aka “The General”!

Timeless travels headfirst into its season 2 finale this week! So will this will be the last trip for the Time Team (both literally and figuratively)? Unfortunately, we don’t have an answer to this question just yet so while we impatiently wait to find out if the sleeper inside NBC who keeps trying to alter history by canceling this show has been activated, we’ve chosen to remain optimistic for a season 3 pick-up. Especially since there’s plenty of ways Rittenhouse can screw up history right in the present!

This week Timeless is offering us a 2-hour special! But full-disclosure, it’s really two episodes that operate mostly independently so we’ve split up all the spoilery goodness into two very special finale advanced previews!

Following last week’s anxiety-riddled episode regarding Agent Christopher’s fate (Sakina Jaffrey), episode 9 heads to the Civil War again (and in the perfectly faux enthusiasm only Rufus can muster “Yay!”). Specifically, Beaufort County, South Carolina on June 1st, 1863 where Harriet Tubman (guest star Christine Horn) turns out to be the episode’s namesake! And if there was ever a moment to make some kind of Hamilton reference (despite the difference in time period) this would be it! Of course no one does, but the episode is full of plenty of other solid pop culture references! But this particular mission is an important one to both Harriet Tubman’s legacy and a big blow to the Confederates.

More from NBC

The previous episodes posited some interesting questions about time. When Wyatt (Matt Lanter) introduced himself to a young Agent Christopher he used his real name. And when Lucy (Abigail Spencer) and Jiya (Claudia Doumit) give her the flash drive, their part in her future wasn’t on it and yet they too were unforgettable. But the episode very subtly asked some very indirect questions. Like what would have happened if Wyatt hadn’t given her his real name? She assembled the Time Team and part of that came from her experience the day Regan was shot. In fact, the changes that were made were for the better – the improved relationship with her mother. And that’s been a major theme this season. Family.

Episode 9 has a pretty clear focus, though. The things we’re willing to sacrifice for the people we love and the family we hold so close. In fact it’s bookended by several significant moments. The opening scene follows Carol (Susanna Thompson) and Nicholas (Michael Rady) where they stand in front of the grave of his daughter/Carol’s mother/Lucy’s grandmother. Carol reminds Nick, what and who he is fighting for.

Much in the same way the next scene Connor Mason (Paterson Joseph) and Agent Christopher reveal to the OG three what they’ve discovered about Jessica (Tonya Glanz) – Rittenhouse has been following her her whole life. Of course all of is compounded by the revelation from Wyatt that Jessica is pregnant. Things are put on hold when they learn the Mothership has headed to 1863.

However, the Time Team arrives too late. The sleeper agent has already attacked the troops that were previously successful. And it literally becomes a race against time to get reinforcements while also attempting to find the sleeper because Harriet Tubman is a woman with her own mission and she won’t let anyone stand in her way!
