Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack review: A beautiful reminder of the live concert
Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert was Easter’s highlight production. Now you can relive it with the soundtrack.
Can you believe Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert was more than two months ago? It only feels like yesterday that we heard John Legend would perform as Jesus, leading to much excitement about the production. Then other big names were added, including Alice Cooper as King Herod.
The whole night was a success and now there’s a chance to relive the magic with the Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack. The soundtrack has everything from the night, whether you want to feel the emotion of Sara Bareilles’ rendition of “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” or Brandon Victor Dixon’s powerful “Judas’ Death.”

Out of the whole night, the only disappointment for me personally was Cooper’s rendition of “King Herod’s Song.” That was the case during the live performance, too. After years of growing up with the 1970s version of the movie, the performance felt a little stilted and forced. However, the soundtrack helps to cut out the physical performance from the night and focus just on the vocals. There’s no need to skip the song, although it still remains the weakest of the whole album.
Pontius Pilate’s number with Christ, “Pilate and Christ,” remains one of my favorite tracks from the whole Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack. Ben Daniels captured Pilate’s character in the musical perfectly and that translates without the physical performance within the music.
The album captures the feeling of watching live, as the cheering and cuts between the songs are all still included. You’ll feel like it’s Easter 2018 all over again.
