Teen Wolf (MTV)

Aired: 2011-2017
Created by Jeff Davis
Starring Tyler Posey, Dylan O’Brien and Holland Roden

As opposed to Scandal’s bad ending, Teen Wolf’s had one of those series finales of disappointing because it didn’t feel like a series finale.

On paper, “The Wolves of War” has all the ingredients necessary for quality last episode. Loved and loathed characters died. A bunch of old friends and allies returned. And a seemingly unstoppable Big Bad was finally defeated. But here’s the thing; all of that stuff happened in every one of Teen Wolf’s season finales. The biggest problem with the show’s finale bow is that it didn’t have a strong sense of finality.

Part of the problem was some baffling narrative omissions. True to its title, Teen Wolf revolved around a werewolf named Scott (Posey) who attended high school. But in shocking deviation from teen drama convention, the audience doesn’t get to see Scott and friends attend prom or graduate. While the show’s finale obviously had a lot of storylines to wrap up, skipping over those two essential rituals robbed the series of catharsis.

Along similar lines, Teen Wolf’s series finale didn’t give viewers a sense that things had irrevocably change. The Beacon Hills gang didn’t head off from college in a touchingly scored montage.  The existence of supernatural creatures didn’t become public knowledge. The show’s one true pairing, Stiles (O’Brien) and Derek (Tyler Hoechlin), didn’t get together.

Admittedly, Teen Wolf doesn’t have one of the all-time worst series finales, but few feel like greater missed opportunities.
