The Romanoffs is the latest from Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner
Amazon’s highly anticipated The Romanoffs is now scheduled to premiere on October 12.
Written, directed, and produced by Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner, The Romanoffs promises potential character deceptions far greater than Weiner’s greatest creation: Don Draper.
The premise of the new Amazon show is that there are eight separate stories from around the world. In this intriguing premise, there are many characters who believe that they are the descendant of the Romanov family.

According to The Verge, the Romanovs (original Russian spelling) were the Russian royal family. Heavily connected with the Danish and Greek royal family, Queen Alexandra was in fact a direct descendant of Britain’s own Queen Victoria, as her mother was Victoria’s daughter Alice.
The family was brutally massacred by the Bolsheviks 100 year ago, in July 1918 during the Russian Revolution. Only some of the remains of the family were discovered in the 90s fueling speculation that Alexei Nikolaevich, and Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna or Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna possibly survived. Although additional remains were later found, there has been a cornucopia of Romanov related pop culture imagining a world where members of this royal family miraculously survived.
It is not clear whether this tale will be something akin to The Americans, perhaps continuing to fuel the current political obsession with Russian secrets. More than likely, Matthew Weiner has crafted a deep and dark story with intriguing characters. There will most likely be a story that will be slowly unveiled through the episodes, and hopefully be fleshed out through many seasons.
Starring in the new series includes some familiar Mad Men stars, as well as other well-known character actors including Cara Buono, Kerry Biché, Griffin Dunne, Aaron Eckhart, Jary R. Ferguson, Kathryn Hahn, Christina Hendricks, Isabelle Huppert, Jack Huston, Diane Lane, Amanda Peet, Mary Kay Place, Andrew Rannell, Paul Reiser, John Slattery, and Noah Wyle. The Romanoffs production crew are mainly from Mad Men, including the brilliant Mad Men costume designer Janie Bryant
In the past three years since Mad Men ended, Matthew Weiner has written a novel called Heather, the Totality, and has written and directed the movie Are You Here, and has directed an episode of Orange is the New Black. Otherwise, he has fully devoted himself to the highly anticipated Romanoffs.
