Agents Of SHIELD: Season 6 probably won’t be the last season

Despite Agents Of SHIELD being delayed until Summer 2019, that doesn’t mean the series is over. ABC’s Channing Dungey recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter where she didn’t dismiss the possibility of more seasons following Season 6.

It was announced in early May of this year that Agents Of SHIELD would be held back until Summer 2019. At the time, an explanation wasn’t given and it drew many to the conclusion of SHIELD being canceled soon thereafter. However, ABC’s Channing Dungey made it clear that the series isn’t over just yet.

While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Dungey answered the site’s inquiry into what the future holds for Agents Of SHIELD. She revealed the move to summer was due to low ratings and a possible change. The show hasn’t done so well with same day viewings but delayed viewership is steady, giving reason to the latest move. Check out Dungey’s comments below:

"We’ll see. I feel like last season was our strongest creative season ever and the fan base remains very loyal — and we do very well in delayed viewing. It’s my hope that by moving it to summer, where our live-same-day ratings are less important and it might be able to continue for longer."

What this means for SHIELD is that a potential hike in overall ratings could motivate ABC to continue developing more. Dungey noted how Season 5 was best creative-wise but that doesn’t mean a future season can’t outdo it. If Season 6 can match up, then the network will likely consider renewing the series further.

As far as storylines go, there are tons that can be spun into SHIELD’s ongoing plot. And with Season 5 concluding on a somewhat defining note, this is the perfect time to begin a new arc. That said, the plot can go in just about any direction from here.

While the series could tie up all loose ends, now’s probably a good time for S.H.I.E.L.D. restore its reputation. Last we heard, the entire organization was disbanded and the U.S. government was on the hunt for every active member. It’s possible Coulson sorted out the whole mess with Talbot, but there’ still a lot more to be done.

Additionally, the whole debacle with Robbie Reyes has yet to be resolved. Something may already be planned for Season 6 but if not, Reyes and the Hell Dimension require a degree of closure.

There’s also that Mephisto tease Gabriel Luna made back in 2016 which needs some resolution, too. Luna may have spoken out of turn but his mention means Marvel intends to use Mephisto at some point. It could be inconsequential to Marvel’s current plans, or it could not. Either way, Mephisto sounds like a decent villain to center Season 6 around.

Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns to television in Summer 2019.
