In Part III, The Sinner went into the past to look for answers for present day situations. The show is starting to tie everything together.

One thing The Sinner has held firm with between its two seasons so far is the idea that learning more about someone’s past will inform why something happened in the present day. In season 1, it was a trauma that Cora Tanetti went through. In season 2, it’s a mix of Marin’s past as well as Julian’s.

However, we’re also diving into Detective Ambrose’s past as this case brings him back to his hometown where he went through a tragedy. There are a lot of revolving pieces in this season as we learn more about both detectives and how their lives intertwine with the case and the city.

“Part III” brought more flashbacks that tied into the present day. Detective Novack’s relationship with Marin forces her to dive deeper into trying to figure out what happened to Marin and why she wasn’t at Mosswood when they went to search the premises. We see a series of flashbacks from just before Marin went off to Mosswood.

For Detective Ambrose, he has more bad dreams and we see more flashbacks to his time there as a kid. These don’t tie in as much, but it makes us sympathize with him a little more and it is easier to understand why he’s helping Julian. He has his own demons that he’s battling and seems like he can relate to what Julian is going through.

Vera is the one who we don’t know much about, though. They’re probably leaving that for later in the season as we build up facts like the fact that Marin might actually be Julian’s mother. Detective Novack had gone through Marin’s things and found a book with the name Julian circled repeatedly.

We also have the fact that when asked about Vera and Mosswood, Dr. Poole leaves the room and commits suicide. She’s the one character who has a lot of unknowns. Why would she claim to be Julian’s mother? Did she do something to Marin? Most importantly, how much more is she hiding? Hopefully, we get some answers to these questions over the next five episodes.

The Sinner airs on Wednesdays on USA at 10 PM.
