Guy Ritchie

In the late 90s and early 2000, Guy Ritchie was one of the hottest filmmakers in the world. His whip-smart and ultra-cool British crime films Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch were critical and financial hits. Sadly, Ritchie went on a bit of a losing streak with 2002’s Swept Away, a Madonna-led rom-com that began a notorious bomb. In 2009, he rebounded with Sherlock Holmes, a stylish adventure movie that proved Ritchie could hang at the blockbuster level. However, he once again stumbled with the back-to-back flops of 2015’s The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and 2017’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.

A quintessentially British filmmaker, Ritchie would be an excellent choice. Even his worst films are incredibly energetic and have a clear sense of place, two qualities that are sorely lacking in today’s blockbusters. Additionally, he has a knack for making his protagonists legible in epic narratives. For all its flaws, King Arthur’s main character has a distinct personality and clear-cut motivation, two things that the Daniel Craig-era Bond movies need to succeed.

Ritchie also has a strong sense of style. These movies are filled with characters that speak, act and dress in unique and appealing ways. As much as James Bond is an action hero, he is also a style icon. And Ritchie is the kind of filmmaker who can ensure that the character will retake his position as one of cinema’s coolest characters.

Currently, Ritchie is directing the upcoming live-action Aladdin movie and is set to direct a third Sherlock Holmes movie set for release in 2020. As such, Ritchie will be busy for the next few years. However, if the Broccoli family chooses to push the release date for Bond 25 back a few years – and they should, given how Spectre turned out – Ritchie should be the franchise’s next director.
