The Good Place season 3, episode 3 recap: Chapter 29

On this week’s episode of The Good Place, Trevor infiltrates the group to try and break them up. Meanwhile, Michael and Janet try to intervene.

This week on The Good Place,  Adam Scott returned to the show as the demon Trevor, who was sent to Earth by Sean to try and derail Michael’s experiment. Trevor has come in as a new recruit in Chidi’s thesis experiment. And he has come in hard. Trevor has decided to play the overeager, overenthusiastic new friend in order to drive the group apart from the inside. He brings in lemon bars and participates in too long hugs.

The group gathers in the MRI lab to start the first wave of brain scans for Chidi’s study. Simone explains that she is going to scan each participant twice. Once as a base line and then once after she shows them each a series of images from their near death experience. For Jason, that would be a safe, a snorkel, and whip it cans. Chidi comments that his death would have been one heck of an experience.

Speaking of Jason, he’s curious to see if they can add extra radiation to the MRI so the spider he is holding can give him superpowers. And Tahani is concerned she won’t be able to wear her bra made of pure gold in the MRI machine.

In the hallway, Trevor runs into Michael, who is wearing a trenchcoat and a hat, and they trade Dick Tracy jokes. Trevor brags about how easy it will be to break the group up, and remind Michael that everyone has seen him, so he can’t interfere.

Back in the room, Eleanor pulls Chidi aside and asks if they can continue to do one on one lessons. She learns better that way. Chidi turns her down because he is too busy. Just when Eleanor tries to talk him into it, Trevor interrupts and drags the whole gang down to an American themed restaurant: Cowboy Skyscraper.

At the restaurant, Trevor continues the overenthusiastic vibe by handing out sweatshirts with everyone’s faces on it with “The Brainy Bunch” written above, and encouraging Jason to give everyone Transformers themed nicknames. Just when Trevor is sure his plan is going to work, Janet shows up as their waitress to keep an eye on him. However, because they’re on Earth, she doesn’t have any of her powers, and it’s frustrating her not to be able to summon things.

While Janet is complaining to Michael about not being able to use any of her powers, Trevor has successfully broken Chidi. He places doubts in Chidi’s mind about the ethics of socializing with his subjects, and Chidi predictably melts down. Eleanor tries to talk him down, even going so far as to say that she thought they were friends. Chidi tells her to be friends with the rest of the group, but Eleanor says she’s not there to be with the group, she flew all the way to Australia to be with him.

Trevor is feeling like he has won. Chidi is melting down, Eleanor left the bar early, and Jason and Tahani went home together. However, the next morning, he learns just how wrong he was. Jason and Tahani didn’t sleep together, and when Eleanor doesn’t show up for the study Chidi goes off and finds her. He asks her to stay in Australia and give him three months.  She agrees.

Back in the hallway, Michael brags about the unbreakable bond between Chidi and Eleanor. Trevor thinks he can win, however at that moment the Doorman shows up and tells Michael, Trevor and Janet that the Judge wants to see them.

They meet on a bridge and the Judge is not happy about their interference. She throws Trevor off of the bridge and tells Michael that his meddling has ripple effects. England has left Europe, The Jacksonville Jaguars are good now, and The Greatest Showman made millions of dollars. She tells them they can no longer monitor the four humans, and they are being sent back to The Bad Place.

And that is when everything Janet tried to summon on Earth comes crashing down between Michael and Janet and the Judge. As stuff begins crashing down, Michael and Janet make a run for it. With an assist from the Doorman, Michael and Janet make an escape to Earth.

Tahani’s Name Drops – This week Tahani name dropped Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively as she described attending a party with them where they drank way too much kombucha.
