Go Wildcats! High School Musical is returning to Utah to film the TV Series

Disney Channel is bringing the new High School Musical TV series back to Utah to film for a 2019 release date. The High School Musical movies were also filmed in Utah.

We’re all in this together! Production for Disney Channel’s new High School Musical TV series is slated to begin in Salt Lake City, Utah in 2019. The original High School Musical movies were filmed in Utah as well. The TV series will consist of 10 episodes and it will be premiering late in 2019 on Disney’s new streaming service.

This will no doubt bring in viewers to Disney’s new streaming service. Some will be curious and check it out. The press release reads the project will receive a state film incentive to film in Utah, and the project will spend more than $14 million in Salt Lake City.

“They’re hoping to use some of the original locations because they’re so well-loved,” said Utah Film Commission director Virginia Pearce in a statement.

"“Visitors still make special trips to Utah to see where High School Musical was filmed and we’re incredibly proud of its resonating impact with generations of young people,” said Virginia Pearce, Director of the Utah Film Commission in a statement. “We’re thrilled to introduce a fresh take on this classic story and continue to support Disney’s production here in Utah.”"

Even more exciting than this? Disney confirmed the series will be filmed at Salt Lake City’s East High, where the High School Musical movies were filmed. This will give many of us fans the chills and nostalgia when we see this premiere. Go, Wildcats!

The High School Musical movies were filmed in Albuquerque, the TV series one will be filmed in Salt Lake City. “This is the staging of ‘High School Musical: The Musical’ at the school where it was originally shot,” Pearce said.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the title is High School Musical: The Musical. Disney says the show will be shot as a docu-style series and follow a group of students at East High who stage a performance of High School Musical for their winter theater production only to realize that as much drama happens off-stage as on stage. Every episode will feature a new rendition of a song from High School Musical as well as an original song.

There’s also a High School Musical 4 that is in the works, 10 years after the first movie premiered. They started casting in March 2016. There hasn’t been any news so far on that front.

Unfortunately, none of the original actors will be in the fourth installment. It will introduce a new cast of characters and actors. It will be continuing the story of High School Musical, while introducing new East High Wildcats and their cross-town school rivals, the West High Knights.

Director Kenny Ortega isn’t returning either. Jeffrey Hornaday (Teen Beach and Teen Beach 2) will be directing High School Musical 4. I wish they brought back the original actors along with Kenny. They could of made it the college/adult years. I’m sure the majority of us can agree on this one. Although I’m not sure how weird that would be for Disney Channel.
