21. The Mindy Project

Episode: Season 1, Episode 6, “Thanksgiving”

What’s on the menu: The Mindy Project looked very different in its first season than it did in any succeeding season. The sitcom famously underwent a number of changes in its supporting cast throughout six seasons and 117 episodes. When Mindy and the gang celebrated Thanksgiving in Season 1, the series was still finding its footing, but it was just as razor-sharp funny as ever. Anna Camp’s Gwen hosts the holiday, and Mindy finds herself caught up in relationship drama.

During the Thanksgiving party, Mindy runs into an ex-boyfriend, who’s dating a woman who happens to be the spitting image of Mindy. Of course, she can’t let it go and causes a few scenes, as Dr. L is wont to do. Elsewhere in the episode, Mindy discovers Josh might want the opposite of an exclusive relationship, which is probably for the best since she turns out to be not the best guy in the world. Even though The Mindy Project hadn’t hit its groove, “Thanksgiving” serves up a holiday outing that’s nothing short of classic.

Why we’re thankful for it: The Mindy Project’s sole “Thanksgiving” episode showed off the insane potential Mindy Kaling and her workplace romantic comedy would later realize in excess. If there’s one thing the Mindy team knew what to write and execute with precision, it was comedic chaos. Any situation that sends Dr. Lahiri into an absolute spiral, like running into an ex on Thanksgiving, is the show’s bread and butter, or in this case, mashed potatoes and gravy.
