20. Scream Queens

Episode: Season 1, Episode 10, “Thanksgiving”

What’s on the menu: On Thanksgiving in the Kappa house, heads will roll — and be served on a silver platter for dinner. The first season of Scream Queens, which was far superior to the second season, scared up true horror instead of turkey. After the characters’ other plays for the holiday fall through, the end up spending it together in the Kappa house consumed by the looming threat of the Red Devil. When Chanel #3 and Chanel #5 bring in the turkey, they discover the platter holds Gigi’s head. That’s one way to have a vegetarian Thanksgiving.

Prior to spending the holiday together, Chanel and Hester had joined the Radwell family’s celebration, which included a lot of arrogance and even more passive aggression. Chanel apologizes to Hester for trying to kill her (casual), and they leave for campus. Chanel #3 spent the holiday eating her family empire’s TV dinners, but she decides she’s had enough of her family’s mistreatment. Little did everyone know they were walking out of and back into dysfunction when the Kappa house swells with accusations regarding the Red Devil’s identity.

Why we’re thankful for it: Scream Queens never operated with any sense of subtlety, and that’s what made it a true flash-in-the-pan phenomenon. You wouldn’t expect a whodunit horror-comedy anthology series to feature holiday episodes because why break from the mystery narrative? But we’re so thankful for the stark realism of the surreal world of Scream Queens and its crazy take on turkey day. Plus, Emma Roberts delivered the performance of a lifetime as Chanel Oberlin, and watching her read the Radwells to filth never gets old. Happy Thanksgiving!
