17. Modern Family

Episode: Season 6, Episode 8, “Three Turkeys”

What’s on the menu: As the title of the episode suggests, Modern Family’s sixth season Thanksgiving dinner includes three turkeys and a whole lot of confusion. The multi-Emmy Award-winning comedy series first aired an episode devoted to the turkey-centric holiday in its third season and has aired one annually beginning with the sixth season, which has become a fan favorite and modern classic episode of Modern Family.

In “Three Turkeys,” Phil decides to cook Thanksgiving dinner for the family with Luke as his sous chef and a Nigella Lawson video as his guiding light. Expecting Phil’s turkey to turn out less than perfect, Claire decides to prep her own turkey and hide it in the garage. However, the family decides to have dinner at Jay and Gloria’s supposedly empty home since they’re away on vacation and the Dunphy house experiences a technical difficulty. But they soon discover Jay and Gloria lied about their canceled trip and a third turkey awaits their feast.

Why we’re thankful for it: Sometimes it seems that if you have seen one sitcom Thanksgiving episode, you have seen them all, especially if the sitcom revolves around a family. Most of these episodes try to replicate the insanity that comes free of charge when you gather a large family of opposing personalities under one roof. But if you’re lucky, you’ll find a show that gets it so right. Modern Family’s “Three Turkeys” tells a familiar sitcom story, but it doesn’t get much better than these characters and their sarcasm, schemes, and seriously hysterical holidays.
