26. 2 Broke Girls

Episode: Season 1, Episode 10, “And the Very Christmas Thanksgiving”

What’s on the menu: For 2 Broke Girls’ very special Thanksgiving, Max and Caroline celebrate Christmas a little early. But you know there’s plenty of cupcakes on the menu because they probably can’t afford a full turkey dinner. Too bad Max hadn’t thought of her maple bacon “spring break” cupcake, which would have been a perfect fall treat — even if the girls have to pretend it’s Christmas a month early to make a few extra bucks.

On top of their work at the diner, Max and Caroline commemorate Caroline’s first holiday without her millions hustling at a side gig. The two broke girls dress up as elves for a department store’s so-called Santaland, like in the movie Elf. Of course, Max doesn’t have the cheeriest view on the holiday season, and Caroline manages to remember the positive memories attached to Thanksgiving and Christmas in lieu of moaning about having nothing to be thankful for.

Why we’re thankful for it: As a multi-camera sitcom, 2 Broke Girls could often be written off as just another formulaic comedy fishing for laughs. But at its best, the series could tug on the heartstrings and get more than a few laughs. Caroline hopes to visit her incarcerated father, but she’s barred from seeing him. Meanwhile, Max hilariously receives a promotion to Mrs. Claus status, and both of their perspectives on the holidays shift. Although this episode might lean toward Christmas, it’s the perfect episode to watch while eating pie, er, cupcakes and reveling in the holiday spirit.
