The Simpsons fifth season was another great collection of episodes and the couch gags that go with them are just as interesting.

Homer’s Barbershop Quartet – An off-screen director does three takes of the opening couch gag. Take one involves the Simpsons shattering like glass before Santa’s Little Helper stares at the mess, take two features them running in and mashing together in a multicolored blob, and on take three they all run into each other and explode on impact, with Maggie’s pacifier landing on the crater that forms as a result.

Cape Feare – Repeat of the couch gag from Lisa’s First Word that involves an elaborate show business opening number.

Homer Goes to College – The Simpsons sit on the couch only to be stepped on by a massive foot.

Rosebud – The family arrives in their living room to find another lookalike version of themselves already sitting on the couch.

Treehouse of Horror IV – Zombie versions of the family break through the floor and sit in their usual places while groaning.

Boy-Scoutz n’ the Hood – Five pairs of eyes walk into a totally dark room. The lights turn on to reveal the Simpsons’ living room, but the eyes still have no body to match them. But eventually their bodies all race in and sit down to reconnect with their eyes.

The Last Temptation of Homer – Instead of their living room couch, the family winds up sitting down on David Letterman’s couch.
