After an uneven Season 11, Doctor Who needs to make these five changes for Season 12 if the series is to return to greatness.

On Sunday, Doctor Who Season 11 concluded in solid but unspectacular fashion. As the finale made it to air, BBC confirmed that aside from the New Year’s Day special, the British science fiction program will be on hiatus until 2020. But thankfully, it was also confirmed that the show’s winning new cast – Jodie Whittaker, Bradley Walsh, Tosin Cole, and Mandip Gil – will return in Season 12.

While it’s a bummer that the show won’t be back until the next decade, the time off could be a blessing in disguise. Especially as it should give showrunner Chris Chibnall and his collaborators time to work out some of the problems that led to Season 11 getting a mixed reception from some long-time fans.

Like recent seasons of the show, Doctor Who Season 11 featured strong performances, beautiful cinematography, emotionally resonant stories, and impressive special effects. And also like recent season the show, the series’ flawed writing caused it to fall short of its full potential.

However, it should be noted that none of its problems are fatal. The 13th Doctor is a compelling central character and most of her new friends received enough texture to feel like real people over the course of the season. With that strong foundation, it’s clear that the program only needs a few tweaks to be more successful rather than a complete rebuilding.

To begin, one thing Doctor Who’s writers could do to make the Season 12 more satisfying is to further develop Gils Yasmin “Yaz” Khan.
