#9 Land of the Lost

Original Release Date: Land of the Lost’s original release date was June 5, 2009.

Box Office Earnings: Land of the Lost had a massive $100 million budget. The film earned $18 million on opening weekend the film grossed $49 million dollars overall domestically. Needless to say, it did not do well.

Critical Acclaim: Scoring a measly 26% on Rotten Tomatoes, critics claim the movie is “less kid-friendly and remains inconsistent.” This is not a shock considering it was a very unorthodox approach to the material and made moviegoers not sure who the film was for. Frankly, I think it was misunderstood.

About the Role: In the movie, Will Ferrell plays Dr. Rick Marshall, his version does not seem to have anything to do with the original Land of the Lost television series. It’s easy to understand why maybe fans of the television series were put off by the drastic changes. The same core ideas are there but Ferrell’s take on the material is entirely his own. Once they get sucked into the strange space-time dimension it leans hard into being a Will Ferrell comedy instead of being a faithful adaptation.

Simply the Best: I get why some hate this movie but I think it’s a misunderstood gem. Once you get past the expectations of it being a straight adaptation of the show, it becomes easier to enjoy as just a Saturday Night Live-style approach to the source material. Plus, watching Danny McBride work with Ferrell never disappoints.
