The Gifted recap: The 5 takeaways from hoMe
By John Dotson
4. Did Evangeline fake her death?
At the end of last week, Evangeline, the dragon lawyer, reemerged to help the Mutant Underground. This week she had planned a meeting to get a group together to face Reeva. Come to find out halfway through, Reeva had already discovered the plan and had an ambush ready.
That said, before all this took place, Evangeline was able to persuade Erg to come out of the sewer, mainly because he owed her. The weird part though is he mentions that if he didn’t come to the gathering, then Evangeline would threaten the exposure and safety of the Morlocks. So does that mean she is a bad guy?
Once they hear of the ambush they are already too late. Evangeline is said to be dead along with many other mutants. That said, part of me thinks she is not really dead and is actually working for Reeva. If so, that means Reeva already knows Lorna has switched sides.
5. John loses the girl… again
John ready for blood wants to get down to the tragic area of the ambush but everyone has to fight him to stay. As they do, a fight breaks out between him and Erg because Erg still refuses to fight for the people above. As John punches him, he sees the area light up into energy which then shoots out of his eyes and hits John in the chest.
The moment gives Clarice pause because she refuses to watch someone she loves get hurt again. Explained at the start of the episode in a flashback– Clarice had an adopted sister she could not protect from their abusive caretaker. She says she can’t stand by and watch John do the same as far as putting himself in death’s way and her not be able to protect him. She then leaves the Mutant Underground and joins the Morlocks.
Final thoughts
While not an impressive episode, “hoMe” had some interesting turns that were unexpected. It’s an interesting choice to drag the Strucker family inside the Inner Circle, which certainly seems more risky than logical.
Also, Clarice leaving John because he keeps putting himself in danger seems rather silly. Even if she leaves, he’ll still be in danger because they are at war. It felt like a forced narrative turn to just get Clarice and Erg together. Other than that, it’ll be interesting to see what happens to the Inner Circle next week.
