This Is Us is back tonight after two unexpected weeks away and Milo Ventimiglia has some hints about what to expect on the conclusion of “Songbird Road.”

It’s been a hard couple weeks for This Is Us fans with the unexpected hiatus between the tragic Part One and the conclusive Part Two of “Songbird Road.” In Part One we learned about the heartbreaking accident that estranged the two brothers, Jack (Ventimiglia) and Nicky (Michael Angarano/Griffin Dunne). Uncle Nicky persisted in contacting Jack over the years, begging for the chance to explain himself and tell him it was all an accident. Jack has a hard time looking back and facing the past, chosing instead to repress it. While Nicky relives his past constantly, both strategies lead to substance abuse and alcoholism. In typical This Is Us fashion, the Big Three learn that Jack’s dead brother is actually alive and the trio band together to get Uncle Nicky the help and forgiveness he needs.

While the character of Jack Pearson has been set up as an extraordinary person and the perfect husband – which he basically is on the surface – the series has been chipping away at that veneer and revealing the flaws beneath the surface. Exploring Jack’s imperfections only serves to make the character a more perfect human, because without them he’s just words on the page and images on a screen.

Series producer Kevin Fall says this is exactly why they’re digging into Jack’s past, to see who he really is and how he evolved into the person he became. Learning the things Jack kept from them has been painful and confusing for the Pearsons, but it’s amazing that 20 years after his death that their relationship with him is still evolving. “I’m constantly amazed by what we are mining in the life of this man,” Ventimiglia said. He looks forward to exploring the five years in Jack’s life between Vietnam and his marriage to Rebecca, and to exploring “Jack’s pain and the things that make him happy.”

The second part of “Songbird Road” finally airs tonight, Tuesday, February 12 at 9pm ET on NBC.
