Shadowhunters Season 3, Episode 12 review: Original Sin

Jace and Luke’s hunt for Clary

In last week’s mid-season premiere, Luke reached out to Jace to convince him there was a chance Clary had not been killed in the explosion. Rather, he proposed that Lilith’s apartment was able to travel interdimensionally to urban and remote locations around the world. Having only just started to work through his grief, Jace was very hesitant to entertain the possibility, but in Shadowhunters Season 3 Episode 12, we’re going to see Jace return to Luke to learn more about the research complied on that crazy board.

We know from the episode teaser trailer and a prior social media post that Luke and Jace will go on a mission together and their (super cool) matching snow-shoe outfits led us to suspect that they too would find themselves in Siberia. We loved the dynamic between the two of them, both venturing through harsh conditions to learn anything they can about Clary.

The mission at times almost feels a little too streamlined and simple, with each clue they find leading them to a perfect guess about what the audience knows had actually happened. Official photos reveal that Jace does make it to Paris, but he’s going to see first-hand how Clary’s life-link to Jonathan has compromised his plan for a happy reunion. There are pieces to this story that we expected to be carried further in Season 3B, and though there’s definitely a cliffhanger here, the stakes aren’t as high as they’ve previously been. Regardless, if we’re granted any kind of true Clace happiness, we hope it lasts longer than 10 minutes.
