30 greatest Disney movies of all-time
Greatest Disney movies of all-time – No. 16: Tangled
The Disney Renaissance of the 1990s brought us some unforgettable films. Many forget that a second wave began in 2009 and is still ongoing today. The second film to confirm this new Disney Renaissance is 2010’s Tangled. Disney’s second princess film in two years, Tangled became an instant classic in the eyes of new era Disney fans.
Tangled is Disney’s take on the classic Rapunzel story. While many of the story elements stay the same, Disney makes Rapunzel more independent and she doesn’t have a prince climbing up her hair. Instead, she meets a thief who helps her escape and they find out who Rapunzel is along with learning the origins of why she was locked in the tower.
Tangled was a call-back to the Disney movies of the ’90s. Not only did the film have a compelling protagonist, evil villain and charming songs, but it featured such an unexpected ending. When Flynn did that to Rapunzel, it was shocking to see the result but made for a much happier ending than the original story. As popular as Tangled was, it even got its own spin-off series in 2017 so it’s clear Disney appreciates everything Tangled did for them.
What makes Tangled one of Disney’s best is its animation. As good as the story and characters are, this film has some of the best animations the studio has ever produced. Whether it be Rapunzel’s braided hair, the visuals in the Snuggly Duckling or the lantern scene, this film is a love letter to animation. Most people might not see it that way, but Tangled was truly a masterpiece for Disney and their animation department.
