Greatest Disney movies of all-time – No. 5: Zootopia

Beginning the Top 5 is a film that might surprise some people. It’s not a classic but rather, a modern Disney film that captivated audiences. Released in 2016, Zootopia became Disney’s second box-office success after Moana. However, this wasn’t a princess film or a fairytale, but rather an incredibly realistic story.

Zootopia is the story of Judy Hopps, a small bunny who wants to be the first rabbit officer in Zootopia. Despite everyone telling her she can’t, Judy successes. Upon a break in a case, she sticks her foot in her mouth and has to fix the mess that she made. Teaming up with Nick Wilde, Judy learns to overcome her prejudices and reflect on who she wants to be as a person, well rabbit.

While Disney has made films with messages before, nothing ended up being quite as powerful as Zootopia. The predator-prey dynamic has a clear parallel to race dynamics and some of the dialogue also alludes to racial differences. Regardless, the film illustrates that in Zootopia you can try everything and be who you want to be.

What makes Zootopia one of Disney’s best is how it mimics real life with one of the best moments is the sloths running the DMV. Obviously, racial tensions and prejudice still exist so that’s another realistic element. What makes the film is the friendship between Nick and Judy, they are such an unlikeable pair, but that’s sometimes how life is. There is subversions of stereotypes but also dark moments, too. While Zootopia is funny, the film is one of the most realistic Disney has ever produced.
