The Hotchkiss family

The Hotchkiss family is the filthy rich nuclear center of the show. It is their money that trudges through the hallowed halls of BHU. Claire Hotchkiss is philanthropic royalty and the suicide of her daughter Taylor has earned their family both admiration in the face of hardship and a wide berth to do as they please. With Taylor out of the picture, it has been on Nolan’s shoulders to uphold the honor of the Hotchkiss name.

The only problem is that A) Taylor isn’t dead, and B) Nolan is a terrible person, or is he?

I didn’t think the Taylor twist was surprising, although I didn’t expect it to be revealed so early on. We have no idea why Taylor faked her suicide or who else is aware of it. We do know she and Alison could be doppelgangers, which means Mona may have had ulterior motives for recruiting her to the university.

We also see Nolan repeatedly do awful things. Ava, Dylan, and Caitlin are the marionettes to his puppet master. He forces them to lie and cheat to assist in maintaining the perfect image.

Yet we see an entirely different side of him when with his sister, Taylor. He claims everything he did, to Ava in particular, was to keep her safe. What is the truth about the Hotchkiss family and how does it tie in to Beacon Guard?

Relationship tango

Speaking of Nolan’s master plan, there is a lot to follow on the romantic spectrum of this show. Let me break it down for anyone who got a bit lost.

  • Beginning with the most important relationship check-in: #Emison. Sadly, they aren’t really together. Alison makes it sound complicated when in reality the writers are probably trying to figure out if they can get Shay Mitchell to guest star at some point.
  • Nolan is potentially bisexual. He is pretending to date Caitlin because his mother approves of her meanwhile he really has feelings for Ava. Scratch that. He has feelings for Dylan? He cheats on Ava with Dylan, but then he also cheats on Ava with one of her models. He tells Taylor later he did it to protect her. I sure hope he uses condoms.
  • Caitlin is only pretending to date Nolan because he is blackmailing her. How? He has pictures of one of Caitlin’s moms cheating on her other mother (supposedly we don’t actually see them kiss in the pictures). If word got out, then her mom’s chances of winning Senate and someday going to the White House would be demolished. However, Caitlin is also dating someone else for real, an Eddie-Redmayne-type-guy named Jeremy.
  • Okay but Dylan, a gay cellist at BHU, is dating a guy (whose name I didn’t catch) and yet may also have feelings for Nolan since he hooks up with him!
