Janos Slynt

Last Words: “I’m afraid! I’ve always been afraid!”

How He Died: Beheaded by newly-minted Lord Commander Jon Snow after refusing to obey an order to go man the Greyguard castle on the Wall.

Why His Last Words Made An Impact: Janos Slynt (Dominic Carter) was always a sniveling coward who hid behind privilege and fancy titles. After he was sent to the Wall by Tyrion as punishment for heartlessly murdering Robert Baratheon’s innocent bastard children, Slynt found solace in his relationship as a lackey to Alliser Thorne. However, not even Thorne could save him when he denied to carry out an order from the Lord Commander.

Slynt’s last words are both memorable and important because they belie his true nature. He’s been a dick his entire life because he’s terrified. He’s terrified of losing face, and terrified of dying. And, in his last moments, he finally ‘fesses up to his truth, but it’s too little, too late. Like Slynt, almost everyone on Game of Thrones is in a perpetual state of anxiety, but how they choose to move through the world in the face of horror is the true test of their character. Slynt failed that test, and gave his life as a result.
