The final memories feature more and more arguments between Jenny and Nate, and it’s obvious the two are growing apart. Though Jenny seems to know deep down the two are no longer the perfect match, she is in denial when Nate breaks up with her.

Jenny kisses him and begs, but Nate simply gets up and leaves the room. To him, it’s truly over and he’s ready to move on. It’s not easy to accept, but the final scene, which is the most heartbreaking to watch, shows Nate having a conversation with Jenny.

He tells Jenny that he’s sorry and that he will do whatever it takes for them to stay together — be it him having to move with her or trying long distance. Nate tells Jenny that even if it doesn’t work out, at least they gave it a shot. It’s all Jenny ever wanted to hear.

Sadly, however, this isn’t a memory, flashback, or happening in present time. This final scene with Nate is in Jenny’s dream and what she wishes had happened. It’s so sad, real, and relatable. After Blair and Erin wake Jenny up, Jenny’s ready to accept the breakup.

Jenny even writes about her feelings and expresses that she and Nate didn’t “grow apart,” they simply “grew” and were what each other needed at the time, but not anymore. Tears!

Still, I don’t know about you, but I really wanted closure and to hear from Nate. The two may no longer be right for each other, but Nate leaves Jenny as if they haven’t been together for 9 years. As if she never mattered to him. Jenny deserves a better goodbye. But that’s the point of it all. This is often how breakups happen and it’s clear Someone Great wanted to keep things as real as possible. We don’t always get an explanation, much less the perfect goodbye.
