Sarah’s lies finally caught up to her in The Village Episode 6. This was always going to play out the way it did.

Caution: There are spoilers from The Village Episode 6 in this post.

The Village Episode 6 finally saw Sarah’s lies come to light. I’m not talking about her night of passion with Nick, either. It all goes back to the big reveal in the pilot episode, something that has come up every week since.

We’ve known from the beginning that Nick is Katie’s biological father. And for the last five episodes, Nick and Sarah had danced around the subject. Sometimes they’ve wanted to tell her and other times they’ve wanted to keep it a secret for a little longer. Well, Sarah’s lies have caught up to her, as Katie finally figured out the truth.

Katie’s reaction was always going to be the same. After all, this is more than just believing her father had just up and left. Sarah clearly made it seem like Katie’s father had died. Like so many other TV shows set in New York, Nick was a firefighter in 9/11 before joining the Army. I’ll ignore that overused storyline in TV for now and just focus on the lies that Sarah allowed her daughter to believe.

She let Katie think her father had died as a firefighter when really Sarah just hadn’t told Nick the truth about being pregnant – and then had the audacity to be angry that he wasn’t in the delivery room with her! Katie suddenly found out that her father wasn’t dead but had been a soldier and immediately jumped to the conclusion that he didn’t want to know her for 17 years.

And The Village was always going to see this reaction. No matter how Katie found out, she was always going to be angry and she has every right to be. Sarah lied to her daughter about her father. Finding out 17 years later that, actually, her father was alive was hurtful and was always going to be difficult to accept.

Something I hope that happens is that Katie realizes that Nick never knew. He’s not the villain in this story, the deadbeat dad who chose to be a soldier over a father. Nick never knew. Sarah had kept it a secret and, effectively, lied to both of them. Clearly, Nick has had time to deal with that but Katie is only just finding out the truth.

Just the idea of Sarah lying to her was always going to hurt Katie. There would immediately be questions and anger about the truth being kept for her for so long – and not just that Nick was her father but that Katie had been allowed to believe her dad was dead. It was an unnecessary lie that was always going to come back to bite Sarah in the behind.

This will likely have a knock-on effect for her pregnancy storyline. Right now, she’s considering adoption still. After meeting a woman who had lost her baby in a late-stage miscarriage, Katie finally found someone who could take care of her baby better than she could. However, could she allow her child not to know the full truth after having this bombshell drop on her?
