From creepy ghost children to a sinister serial killer, we’re breaking down the series premiere of NBC’s new series, The InBetween.

Cassie Bedford is a heavy-drinking, ghost-seeing, casual-sex-having, trooper of a woman and I already love her. To be fair, if I was seeing spectral visions on the regular and having nightmares about violent murders, I would turn to the bottle too. But to be fair, Cassie never appears to be a “mess.” She drinks because she is constantly exposed to brutal visions of peoples’ worst moments. I have a penchant for adoring complicated women on television and Cassie certainly fits the bill.
Even better, she shirks the traditional sullen, damaged, and sarcastic routine for a more positive and self-confident one. She isn’t ashamed of her abilities and is very nonchalant about what she can and can’t do. Cassie doesn’t feel the need to prove herself to anyone, as shown by the way she handles herself around Tom’s new skeptical partner, Damian.
Potential gay dads alert
It has become a habit of mine to seek out any LGBTQ+ representation in new television shows and, I could be mistaken, but it appears Tom might be gay. He mentions Cassie is his foster daughter and we see a rather domestic scene of him, a man named Bryan, and Cassie together in a kitchen.
The vibe is that Tom and Bryan are together and have raised Cassie as a family. They even discuss Cassie as a daughter they share between them. However, nothing explicitly affectionate is said and they don’t share any physical contact so the jury is still out on whether or not this is true but it seems to be the implication. Fingers crossed because it would be awesome to have a gay main character in Tom.
Case of the week
A woman is found on shore with her eyes skillfully removed from her skull. She was murdered Monday night, but the killer set it up to appear like she was still alive Tuesday morning to allow themselves a fake alibi.
Cassie has a dream about a woman with her eyes missing locked inside a freezer, her son pleads for help. But the woman Cassie saw was not Shannon Bell. Still, her clues about the case and the mysterious connection to Peter Rabbit, wind up paying off.
