Things take a dark turn on this week’s In the Dark as Max and Murphy are forced to go on the run after Nia sends one of her men after the snitch.

While things slowed down some on this week’s episode of In the Dark, the stakes weren’t any less high. Now that Max’s identity as the snitch has been revealed, he isn’t safe and therefore, neither is Murphy.

Nia doesn’t waste any time sending out of her goons to hunt down Max and take care of him. If Max is able to stand trial, she’ll be put away for good and Nia can’t have that.

Unfortunately, Murphy gets wrapped up in Max’s flight plan by being in the wrong place at the wrong time and the couple, amidst their troubles, is forced to hole up in a cabin to escape Nia’s wrath.

On the plus side, this episode offered some fantastic emotional moments between Murphy and Max in addition to another surprising pairing.

5. Darnell realizes Max set him up.

Darnell’s situation at the moment is a good news/bad news one. On the plus side, he has Jules looking out for him in the precinct. She’s getting her badge suspended for interfering with the sting, but so far no one seems to realize she’s secretly hooking up with Darnell. The detectives on Tyson’s murder also don’t have enough evidence to get the case to stick.

On the bad news side, Darnell knows Max set him up. It’s a sad moment because I was fond of Darnell and Max’s relationship and how Darnell was willing to help out when asked. We were starting to see a different side of him. This is surely going to sour things moving forward.

4. Murphy tries to get outside hook-up help.

Struggling to get over her break-up with Max in the best way she knows how, Murphy haunts the local bar for a quick and easy one night stand so she can numb herself with mindless sex. But Jess isn’t willing to be her eyes this time around.

Instead, Murphy gets the aide of two bickering gay men. I thought the scene was pretty funny, especially as it ended up with Murphy going home with a straight-laced guy who they all claimed was Mormon. Hooking up doesn’t make her feel any better though. And Jess isn’t fairing much better either.

3. Jess realizes she’s definitely gay.

With Murphy out of the area and on the run with Max, Jess is left to mope around about her break up with Vanessa alone at her apartment. At least she is until Felix shows up with food from her favorite Indian place. They decide to get high together and things quickly become rather intimate. Jess kisses Felix. There was a nice moment where Felix stopped things to make sure he had her consent which I appreciated.

They are one of the cutest friendships on the show. Before they can actually have sex, Jess stops and apologizes to Felix. She thought that this was what she needed but she really and truly is gay and doesn’t want to hook up with him. Instead, they’re content to cuddle for a while. I hope nothing gets weird between them because I think Felix is a great friend for Jess to have and far more stable than Murphy is.

2. Max and Murphy reconnect.

For a good portion of this episode it appears Murphy might be done with Max. for good She can’t seem to forgive him for getting Tyson killed even though it wasn’t his fault. I think she’s more upset about him lying to her than anything but to be fair, Max didn’t have much of a choice. He either had to cooperate or go to prison.

The ice out doesn’t last long. Even though she claims she wishes they never happened, while showering, Murphy can’t help but give in to her carnal whims. Max walks in on her touching herself and asks her if he “can finish that for her,” and Murphy happily obliges. Oh my god. That scene was hot.

1. Max sacrifices himself for Murphy.

A cabin can’t keep Nia’s man off their trail. Before they can have any pillow talk, Max and Murphy are forced to run again but Murphy can’t run and they have to hide. Eventually, it becomes clear they’re going to be caught so Max boards Murphy on a rowboat and ships her off without him.

From the middle of the lake, she hears a gunshot and thus the episode ends on a massive cliffhanger. Was Max shot? Did he kill the other guy? Next week’s episode will feature poor Murphy trying to hunt him down. First Tyson, now Max, can she catch a break?

Odds & Ends

  • “It’s big.” “I know.” Priceless.
  • Thinking she might die, Murphy tells Max she doesn’t hate him and Max promises her she won’t die. I teared up a little.
