5 reasons to make A Place to Call Home your summer binge-watch
2. It’ll feel like summer
Of course, you could watch A Place to Call Home any time of the year but there’s something about the summer months that makes this worth the watch. The series is set in Australia and you’ll barely ever see bad weather. After all, they don’t get the rain and snow that most of North America gets.
You’ll get a chance to witness Christmas in the summer. It takes you out of the norm and gives you another layer to the family and to the storylines.
Plus, you’ll feel the warmth while watching it in the summer, even if there are Christmas trees around!
1. A Place to Call Home touches on heartbreaking and dark storylines
While the likes of Downton Abbey focused on changing class systems and the fight for women to vote and other similar storylines, A Place to Call Home gets darker. With one character a gay man, there was always going to be the threat of a dangerous storyline — that of shock therapy to “treat” the “condition/perversion.”
But that’s not all. There are mentions of Australia’s fight with Japan during World War II and the aftermath for those who were held as prisoners of war. One of the characters is a Jew and was a prisoner in a concentration camp. Then there are the realities of miscarriages and stillbirths.
I don’t want to go into all the storylines because of major spoilers, but if you want a show that is willing to raise awareness and tell the real stories, this is the show for you. It doesn’t shy away, but at the same time, it doesn’t do things in a gratuitous way.
The writing, the acting, and the directing all come together to make sure these storylines are done in a sensitive way. There’s no forgetting what happened in the past.
