All American continues to deliver compelling television and specious football.

Beverly High is past the halfway point of the season, and All American still hasn’t figured out the reason many sports fans hate Nuke Laloosh’s throwing mechanics in Bull Durham. Sports authenticity is crucial.

Episode 7

Ash gets suspended for the next two games (8 & 9), and he’s most upset because the first of those two games is Homecoming. No, not because he just destroyed Olivia as well as her friendship to Layla, but because he knows scouts will be at that game. So in the world of All American, scouts call Ash up to tell him their itinerary. Uh-huh.

Episode 8

Homecoming game! It’s actually at night. Somehow Chris, the quarterback for Crenshaw, is at the game. Thursday night games are possible, but it’s just convenient is all. What’s also convenient is the “how does Malibu know all our plays”-angle of the episode. Even if they knew the plays, there is no way a coach who made it all the way to the NFL would have a playbook so simple that the opponents would be able to discern the intent of the play based on formation alone.

Furthermore, just because they “know the plays” doesn’t mean Beverly can’t execute better. One only has to be familiar with Vince Lombardi teaching the power sweep to know this.

Then it gets more ridiculous, because Coach Billy Baker decides to counter this disadvantage, he’ll go to Spencer for his Crenshaw playbook expertise. The cherry on top is that Chris is pulled out of the stands to help with offensive play-calling. The offensive coordinator may as well quit since they just used the ending of Varsity Blues to replace him.

Guess what? They’re trailing in the waning seconds and need a miracle to win. AGAIN!! Crenshaw connection Chris and Spencer come up with a halfback pass to the QB, as if Coach Baker doesn’t have that in his play book, and everyone didn’t already see it in Friday Night Lights. Current record 7-1.

Last but not least, the Malibu coach shows up to Beverly to tip off authorities about a Beverly player using drugs. Then the guy gets to stay there during the test. I’m surprised they didn’t give him gloves and let him handle the bottles.

Episode 9-10

Much like Ash, actual football received a two game suspension after the atrocities of episode eight. Thankfully these two episodes are light on football.

Episode 11

High school combines are not incredibly widespread, but they exist. What’s unrealistic, however, is holding them between the end of the regular season and the playoffs. Most are held during the Summer.
