Evil, Nancy Drew, and more pilots

There were plenty of pilots aired at SDCC 2019, offering fans exclusive screenings. The first is the upcoming CBS thriller, Evil. Fans were certainly impressed, with some commenting that the show is “gleefully creepy.” Michael Emerson steps into another villainous role. If you loved him in LOST, get ready for Evil.

The CW’s Nancy Drew took to the stage later in the day, with the pilot for the fans. There are certainly some Riverdale-like elements to the series, including Nancy Drew coming off as a little like Betty Cooper at times and the diner being very much like Pop’s. That’s probably not a bad thing for The CW since the network needs to stick with what’s working for it right now.

There were talks of potential crossovers and major characters coming into the series. The Hardy Boys is currently up for discussion. Interesting.

Stumptown cast and EPs also took to the SDCC 2019 stage. After the pilot screening, fans learned more about what to expect. The series will take some inspiration from the comics, but don’t expect a direct adaptation. The writers wanted some freedom to tell a story.

Tantoo Cardinal was part of the panel, sharing more about her character. One of the things she is happy about is that an Indigenous woman is getting a main role on a TV series. Yes, this is important for diversity — often something that is overlooked by many, even in the fight for diversity.

As for the fight scenes, expect them to be dirty. Cobie Smulders shares that her character is at a disadvantage in terms of size compared to most of her opponents, so it’s important to get tricky to win. Unless you’re Amazon Prime’s Hanna that’s fair!

There was also the upcoming sci-fi series for ABC, Emergence. Donald Faison shared that after doing comedy all his life, he wanted to step into something more serious. He’s a fan of sci-fi, so this made sense for him. It’s definitely going to be interesting to see him in a serious role.

And those who worry about sci-fi on ABC — the network doesn’t have a great track record recently — this series isn’t completely out there. It’s mostly real experiences but with one mysterious element to it.

Amazon Prime kicked off its SDCC attendance with Undone, an upcoming animated series. Fans got to see the first two episodes before the Q&A panel.

This series is going to get extremely real. There’s a focus on depression, anxiety, and more. Everyone has different experiences of various mental health issues and the series is going to touch on that. Fans of BoJack Horseman will want to check out the Prime series as it was developed off the back of the BoJack episode involving a drug trip!

There’s still no trailer or release date for the Prime series, sadly.
