#6 The shapes of kindness

The original Dark Crystal was symbol-heavy. Jen called them “the shapes of kindness,” and they are literally everywhere in the new Netflix prequel/enhancement of the story. Even down to the design of the skin on the mystics, these swirls and shapes are abundant.

In the sneak peek, we see drawings that include symbols from sacred geometry like The Flower of Life, and other drawings that would be recognizable to some. These things were all over the originally designed world and it seems this adventure will take us much deeper into their origin and meanings.

I always noticed the pictures and carvings, sculptures and more in the first Dark Crystal. Upon a recent rewatch, I even noted that the material of the creatures’ clothing was adorned with the patterns. I’m very excited to possibly find out what they’re all about in Age of Resistance.

#5 Like father, like…

Here’s my favorite fun fact: The same family that developed the creatures for the original Dark Crystal movie are back on the scene. And guess who’s in charge? You won’t believe this, but the baby from Labyrinth is all grown up and he’s the Design Supervisor for The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.

Um, first of all, AWESOME. Toby Froud is the son of Brian Froud, the dad of the family business. Papa Froud is also in the creature shop making the puppets exactly the way he did the first time. Not only is this like popping open some kind of time capsule, but it’s a true testament to the authenticity of this production.

And talk about a crossover- even though it’s behind the scenes, since both Dark Crystal experiences just scream Labyrinth, this is a real treat. And that’s not shocking if you know that Jim Henson was behind both hit films, created only a few years apart.

I mean, even if you were today years old when you learned this, surely if you think about it for a fraction of a moment you’ll say, “of courrrrrrrse.”

And in that same spirit of carrying on the family tradition, don’t let it pass you by that this production is being carried out under the watchful eye of Lisa Henson. She is the daughter of Jim, himself and is Executive Producer of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.

Along with Co-Executive Producer and Writer, Jeffrey Addison, Lisa is making sure this story goes where it was always meant to go. Originally conceived as an animated piece, Lisa was thrilled to take on the extremely ambitious and epic event that has become Age of Resistance. If Jim was proud then, he’d surely be at a loss for words now.
