Demi Lovato will appear in the final season of Will & Grace for three episodes, and her character has a connection to Will. Who is she playing?

If there was any confusion that 2020 would be the year of Demi Lovato, look no further than the star’s announcement of her latest return to acting. While also writing and recording her forthcoming seventh album, Lovato joined the cast of Will Ferrell’s Netflix comedy Eurovision, and she’s now boarded the final season of the Will & Grace revival in a “mysterious” role, perhaps the season’s most pivotal. Hmmm.

Lovato guest stars in three episodes of Season 11 as Jenny, a woman who’s described as “guarded” and enters Will’s life under unexpected circumstances. Naturally, speculation about the nature of Jenny’s connection to Will has been swirling, making Demi Lovato’s casting one of the biggest questions surrounding the final season of Will & Grace. So, who is Jenny? We have four guesses.

Will’s student

Some of the leading theories peg Demi Lovato’s character as having some sort of familial relationship to Will, and we’ll break down those in a second. But let’s not forget that Will swapped careers in the Will & Grace revival, leaving his law practice to teach (after a brief stint of working with Grace). There’s a world in which Jenny, Lovato’s character, could be Will’s student and looks to him as a mentor. It’s the thinnest theory, but it’s also a decent lead-in to the next theories.

Will’s long-lost sister

Most Will & Grace fans have leaned more toward Demi Lovato playing Will’s daughter or surrogate (again, we’ll get to those theories), but what if Jenny happened to be a half-sister he has never met and wasn’t aware existed? In the original series, Will’s father George (Sydney Pollack) engages in an affair outside of his marriage with Marilyn (Blythe Danner). Who’s to say if that was his first time stepping out on his marriage or if he knew that his affair(s) resulted in a child?

Will’s long-lost daughter

Now, we know that Will & Grace effectively erased the events of the original series’ finale, in which Will and Grace had a son and a daughter with their respective husbands. But the sitcom’s also no stranger to pulling a bait and switch and introducing a long-lost child (see: Jack’s son). Lovato’s Jenny could very well be Will’s student and his long-lost daughter or simply a daughter he never knew he had. Of course, that begs multiple questions, including who, what, when, and how?

Will’s surrogate

Possibly the theory with the strongest foundation, Demi Lovato could have a mysterious connection to Will and come into his life under unexpected circumstances because she’s his surrogate. We resist saying Will and McCoy’s surrogate because even though Matt Bomer has confirmed his return to the final season, that doesn’t mean they’re still engaged. Maybe Will and McCoy, or Will and Grace, or just Will are/is finally ready to have a child, and Jenny’s willing to help.
