Logan Roy

Game of Thrones Counterparts: Daenerys Targaryen and Tywin Lannister

Why: Much like Tywin Lannister, Logan is obsessed with legacy. Both men are terrible fathers, putting the success of the family over the happiness and well-being of their children. They engage in horrific manipulation and emotional abuse in order to shape and mold their offspring into suitable candidates for ascension to positions of leadership. However, children with cold and distant fathers don’t always make for the most well-adjusted and level-headed leaders, and both Logan and Tywin increasingly utilize their children as pawns instead of treating them like true successors. We all saw how things went down for Tywin. Could a similar fate befall Logan Roy?

However, unlike Tywin Lannister, Logan Roy is a self-made man. Here he earns comparisons to Daenerys Targaryen. Just like the dragon queen, Logan will do whatever it takes to amass ever-dizzying heights of power, wealth, and more power. Starting from nothing, both a young girl from Dragonstone and a young man from Scotland built something out of nothing; they collected respective armies – hers an actual army, and his an army of coveted business holdings – and found devoted followers to do their bidding. So focused on winning, both of these self-made titans blinded themselves to the damage they were doing to the political, physical, or social landscape of the terrain they wished to conquer. In a way, Daenerys Targaryen’s total destruction of King’s Landing symbolizes how Logan’s right-wing news channel, ACN, is poisoning the minds of its viewers.

Can He Win the Game?: Currently, yes. He’s already winning. But long term? No. Logan is at the peak of power right now, and there’s nowhere for him to go but down. In addition to his health problems, he also seems intent on burning bridges with anyone who might come to his aid in an emergency situation. He inspires no love, and that is why he will fail.
