1. The Tudors (2007)

Original Release: April 1, 2007 – June 20, 2010

Ratings: The initial premiere of The Tudors was Showtime’s highest-rated debut at the time. The ratings steadily increased for the first three seasons before declining in its fourth and final season.

Critical Acclaim: The series was nominated for multiple awards and critically acclaimed throughout, although Dormer was typically considered one of the best parts of the show as the outspoken and inimitable Anne Boleyn.

About the Role: The Tudors served as Natalie Dormer’s big breakout performance. Her portrayal of the martyr Anne Boleyn is still lauded as one of the best on television. She arrives in the first season and catches the eye of Henry Tudor. Unfortunately, if you know the story of Anne Boleyn, then you know their love was not meant to be.

Simply the Best: The depiction of Anne’s story on The Tudors is reasonably accurate. Anne was the second wife of King Henry VIII and eventually executed. She remains a prominent political figure in history, particularly regarding the English Reformation. Anne’s outspoken nature, intelligence, and lack of restraint when it came to arguing with her husband about political matters were looked down upon by many in the royal court.

She was not a meek woman by any means, and Dormer is perfectly cast in the role. Public opinion towards her was poor due to rumors and gossip that she could not produce an heir. Many believe she was set up and framed to remove her from the throne.
