8. I Saw the Light (2015)

Original Release Date: March 25, 2016

Box Office: Surprisingly, for a biopic with a strong cast, this movie was a major box office bomb. It wound up only making close to 2 million dollars despite having a 13 million dollar budget.

Critical Acclaim: While the cast performances were praised, particularly Hiddleston, who does some astonishing work in this movie, it was panned otherwise or only received average reviews. Most complained the movie offered nothing special in terms of the story.

About the Role: I Saw the Light is all about the life of country music singer Hank Williams, who tragically passed away when he was only 29. Despite being British, Hiddleston expertly creates an American accent, and not only that, but he can sing it along with the traditional Southern drawl.

There was some controversy when the film released because Williams’ grandson did not approve of Hiddleston’s portrayal. However, other family members of Williams did, and many critics and audience goers thought he was excellent.

Simply the Best: Funnily enough, Hiddleston’s co-star in this movie is one of his Marvel pals, Elizabeth Olsen. In this film, she portrays Audrey Sheppherd Williams. The movie dramatizes a lot of the relationship between the two as Audrey was also Hank’s manager, mother to his son, and occasionally sang duets with him.
